Smog Check Service

Hybrid & Diesel Smog Check in Sacramento

Hybrids and diesels follow their own inspection requirements. We test both, at a STAR-certified station in Sacramento.

Hybrid vehicles

Hybrids are not exempt from smog checks in California. The state's Smog Check Reference Guide lists hybrids as part of the gasoline vehicle group, and says that has been the case since January 2015. Electric-only vehicles are the exception, since vehicles powered solely by electricity are exempt.

Newer vehicles are also exempt from the regular biennial test for their first several model years, so a recent hybrid may not be due yet. Your renewal notice from the state tells you whether a test is required this cycle.

Diesel vehicles

Per the same guide, diesel vehicles that are 1998 model year or newer with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 14,000 lbs or less are subject to smog checks. 1997 and older diesels are exempt, as are diesels with a GVWR of 14,001 lbs or more. If you drive a diesel pickup, van or SUV from 1998 on, you'll most likely need one.
