Gross Polluter Smog Check in Sacramento

If your vehicle has been flagged as a gross polluter, only a STAR-certified station can certify it. We are one.

What is a gross polluter?

The state's Smog Check Reference Guide defines a gross polluter as a vehicle whose tailpipe emissions exceed the gross polluter exhaust emissions standards. A vehicle identified this way can only be certified by a STAR test-only station, a STAR test-and-repair station or, when applicable, a Referee facility. An ordinary smog station can't issue the certificate.

Repair help may be available

According to the same guide, gross-polluting vehicles may be eligible for the state's Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) or a repair cost waiver. Government agency vehicles and permanently registered fleet vehicles are the exceptions. Check the state's Bureau of Automotive Repair website for the current program rules.
