What Is a STAR Smog Station?

Not every smog check station in California can test every vehicle. STAR certification is what determines whether a station can.

California's Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) certifies smog check stations into different tiers based on the equipment and training they have. A STAR station is certified for the full range of testing, including STAR-directed tests that DMV assigns to specific vehicles — often ones flagged for a prior failure, high-emissions history, or as part of random program assignment.

Why the distinction matters to you

If DMV tells you your smog check must be a "STAR-directed" test, it has to happen at a STAR station — a regular Test-Only or Test & Repair station that isn't STAR-certified can't legally perform it. Showing up at the wrong type of station means a wasted trip.

What a STAR station can test

• STAR Smog Check — Regular & STAR-directed vehicle testing for standard registration renewal or ownership transfer.
• Gross Polluter vehicles — STAR station testing for vehicles flagged as gross polluters or previously failed smog checks.
• Hybrid & Diesel vehicles — Specialized testing for hybrid and diesel vehicles, which follow their own inspection requirements.
• Out-of-State Vehicles — Bringing a vehicle into California? We handle out-of-state smog inspections required for registration.
• RVs, Trucks & Minivans — Larger vehicles welcome. We test RVs, trucks, and minivans in addition to passenger cars.

How to check what your vehicle needs

Your DMV registration renewal notice will tell you whether a regular or STAR-directed smog check is required. If you're not sure, we can look it up when you call or when you arrive — walk-ins are welcome during business hours.
